Types of Broadband Technologies
Broadband technologies are used to transmit information across the Internet. There are many types of broadband technologies available, and the types of technology are separated by the number of radio or optical fibers used to transmit the information. Different bandwidths provide different quality of service and different services, like digital subscriber line (DSL), digital telephone service (DAS), dial up, and satellite internet. Let’s talk about each type of broadband technology and how it works.
Fixed wireless broadband is a high speed internet connection that utilizes radio frequencies for transmission over long distances. The fixed wireless broadband connection is capable of delivering a maximum of 10 Mbps to its users. These services use radio transmission towers that closely resemble telephone towers. These towers transmit the signal from the base station to the receiver. This type of broadband technology has higher signal strength compared to other types of broadband technology.
The second type of broadband technology is the Wireless Broadband Technology, or Wi-Fi. This service uses radio waves in an analog form for communication. The analog signal is transmitted by the base station to the access point. The radio waves then go through a transceiver that converts the analog signal into digital form for the reception of data packets. The access point in the device acts as a router that allows access to the information on the network. The data transmission speed is only 10 Mbits/sec or less.
Wireless broadband is very useful when you are traveling, because of its convenience. It is also useful for business, because of the flexibility it offers in terms of time schedules. Most broadband connections offer wireless capability because of the fact that they are used for both personal and business purposes. With this capability, you can transfer files from one location to another and back without having to connect to the wired internet connection. There are also cases wherein you may need to connect to the internet to send email messages to customers, employees, and customers.
There are two types of fiber optic technologies that provide broadband connection: coaxial cables and twisted pair. Coaxial cables have longer wires and these are more expensive than twisted pair. When using coaxial cables, you can transfer signals from one area to another in a much larger range of distances. Unlike with twisted pair, which can only transmit signals in a limited distance, twisted pair can transmit and receive signals in the same area.
The last type of broadband technology is optical fiber optics technology. This technology is more affordable than coaxial and offers the lowest speed. It has the highest bandwidth and reliability. Optics fiber optic technologies have less maintenance and are more flexible than coaxial and can be installed in a wide variety of places, including residential homes, businesses, and buildings.
